What are Staggered Wheel and Tire Packages

Have you ever seen a hot Mustang with a particularly aggressive stance? Almost seems the rear tires look different from the front. Your eyes don’t deceive you: you are feasting on the beauty of a staggered wheel and tire package. This is also referred to as a staggered fitment or a staggered application. What it means is that the rear wheels and tires are not the same size as the front wheels and tires. The rear wheels and tires are wider than the wheels and tires on the front axle. This is done for beauty and performance. You got to love the look of the big tread on the back!

WHY HAVE STAGGERED WHEELS AND TIRES?

If you have a rear wheel drive vehicle and want maximum performance, then you need to consider the staggered fitment. However, as sweet as it is, it will NOT work for all wheel drive or front wheel drive vehicles. Sorry.

The idea behind the staggered wheel and tire sizes is that by putting larger tires on the rear drive wheels, you will get better cornering, better braking, and more power on the road. Those wider rear wheels will mean better traction, especially in the summer and on dry pavement. If you live in a cold climate where you need snow tires in the winter, you will want to switch to a square fitment (all four wheels and tires the same) during those snow tire months.

PROS AND CONS

There are definite pros to going with a staggered wheel and tire package. If performance is your goal, then those wider tires on the rear drive axle are going to give you a better grip on the pavement. That increased grip will equate to better acceleration. You are also going to get a better handle on uneven roads. If you are going for pure aesthetics, the wider stance is going to give your ride a sleeker and more powerful appearance. There are only a couple of downsides. First, you have to remember to rotate your tires laterally. That means instead of the standard rotation, you will just move the right tire to the left and vice versa. No big deal, you just have to remember it. Secondly, depending how wide you go, you might notice some decrease in the ride quality.
